Relationships are about People right? But do your systems know that?
We all know that 'people do business with people', yet most business processes and systems don’t actually work that way. For example, in B2B they have customers, accounts and contacts, but not people. Yet it is people who make or influence buying decisions, who use products and services and with whom you interact and build relationships. In fact they are the organizations.
A Contact is not the same as a Person
'Contacts' refer to job positions or roles (e.g. 'my contact at ABC is the CEO'), not the people in those roles. People are simply text entries; names that change as the job occupants come and go. We keep track of the positions, but not of the people in them. So, whilst in the real world relationships are between people, our systems think they’re between job positions. Bottom line? If we are to use systems to help us better manage relationships we need to shift emphasis from contacts to people.
